The latest Megane is a sober suited and subtle take on the family hatchback ? without being dull. It is a step-up over the previous as it is better built and far nicer to drive. Cheap to buy new and still cheaper second hand, the Megane makes real sense.
The current shape Megane more than matches its rivals. The engines are excellent, car has an excellent ride and handling compromise, is roomy safe and well built. The lack of a premium badge and high supply on the used market has kept prices soft.
The latest generation of petrol engines in the Megane are a massive improvement over the previous petrol engines and are close to the diesels for emissions and economy. They are also usefully cheaper secondhand running at about £1,000 cheaper on average.
The best choice is the 1.6 VVT in Dynamique spec. A comparative diesel will cost £1,000 more and will have a higher mileage. In diesel terms the 1.5 Dci engine is an incredible engine. It offers 61MPG and sits two insurance groups lower than the 1.9.
Pay £11,000 for a nearly new 1.6 petrol in Dynamique spec. If you are going diesel then a nearly new example of the excellent 1.5 diesel motor.
The depreciation will always be fairly heavy, but consistent on these cars, peaking at two years for petrol models. Diesel depreciation should be substantially less.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Renault Megane you would aim to buy a 5 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Renault Megane cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Renault Megane cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Renault Megane cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
