The 45 was a competitive car at it's launch but times have moved on. Like the 25 it's still very strong on handling but in other areas it's way off the pace. It's cheap though, and despite the collapse of the Rover Group, still cheap to maintain.
If all you want is a cheap family hatchback that drives well and won't cost much to maintain then look no further. However in many crucial areas (such as accommodation, refinement and safety) the 45 is a car from another era.
If you can find one then go for the BMW powered 2.0 diesel. This is a far superior engine to the often unreliable K-series petrol units. The car is so cheap anyway that the diesel premium is worth paying here.
Go for a 2.0 diesel in ES or IL trim if you can find one. Make sure the car has air-con and ABS brakes or bargain hard if either of these are missing.
The 2.0 BMW diesel powered Rover 45 is a bit of a bargain. Pay around £3500 for a 5 year old example with around 45,000 miles on the clock.
Depreciation is flat on these cars. There is no best time to buy.
