Balanced... That's the word that describes the 9-3. It is very comfortable, fast, quiet. Further it is a subtle and a sensible and slightly cheaper alternative to premium rivals such as the 3-Series BMW and Audi A4.
Excellent to drive, with a typically sensible and well laid out Saab cabin, great engines, excellent seats and a great image the 9-3 is a good bet in this part of the market.
The diesel 9-3's don't command a hefty premium and they are excellent units also used by Vauxhall and Alfa Romeo.. The 2.0 litre petrol units (cars labeled 1.8 actually use the same 2.0 litre unit as the 2.0's - pretty confusing) are also very good.
A 1.9TId diesel will cost roughly the same as a petrol. If you are after diesel pick a 1.9 Tdi 150 in mid ranking Linear trim. If you want to go petrol you can get a 210bhp Areo model for similar money.
Saloons are, on average, a few hundred pounds less than estates. Pay £10-£11,000 for a 3 year old 1.9 Tid as a Sportwagon estate at 3 years old with around 40,000 miles on the clock.
The best time to buy will be at 3 years old when the first MOT is due. Depreciation can run as high as 27% at this time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Saab 9-3 you would aim to buy a 4 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Saab 9-3 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Diesel Saab 9-3 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Diesel Saab 9-3 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
