Originally launched in 1997, the 9-5 is a very old car though it doesn't feel or look like it. An excellent range of engines from 1.9 Tdi up to the 260hp 2.3 turbo petrol in the Aero. Comfortable, fast and subtle with an excellent safety record.
With the usual brilliant Saab interior and seats it the 9-5 offers comfort in spades. The handling is far from class best but the car is competitive elsewhere. Especially in terms of space.
Most will choose the 1.9 or earlier 2.2 diesels but the 2.0 and 2.3 petrols are around £1000 to £1500 less and usually have slightly lower mileage. The 3.0 petrols and diesels are expensive to buy and maintain but have low miles and lavish equipment.
The pick of the 9-5 range are the low powered petrol models. They are much cheaper than the diesels to buy, have lower average mileage and have proven Saab petrol turbo technology. The one to go for is a 2.0T in mid range Linear spec.
Pay around £4500 for a five year old 2.0T Linear with 50,000 miles on the clock. For a 2.2 diesel of the same age pay another £850. A fully specified 3.0 Tdi will cost around £6500 with around the same mileage. The petrol Aero models are specialist cars.
Saab depreciation is savage. Either this is great because you get a lot of car for your money or it's not because it won't hold on to it. In this case the latter is true as the 9-5 is such a great car. Buy a three year old petrol and save £10,000!
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Saab 9-5 you would aim to buy a 4 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Saab 9-5 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Saab 9-5 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Saab 9-5 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
