The Alhambra is essentially a VW Sharan with different badges and as a nearly new car, it can be up to £4,000 cheaper. It may look like a bloated van with windows, but it is supremely competent. More than a match for rivals such as the Peugeot 5008.
The bland looks hide a superbly competent car. Once inside you realise that it is a clever answer to the family car question. The flexible 7 seat option is brilliantly realised and the interior as tough as they come. It’s very smooth to drive too.
The 2.0 diesel engine suits the car brilliantly and are the most popular choice. There are small petrol options but they are underpowered for such a big machine.
Most Alhambras are found in plain SE spec, or SE Lux. This reflects the utilitarian role this car plays in most people’s lives. But that’s fine as SE gives you climate control, ABS, cruise control, electric windows and Bluetooth communications pack. And the SE Lux gives you a bit more luxury on top.
Buy a nearly new Alhambra if you want a cheap Sharan. Once the car is over one year old however, Alhambras are not cheaper than the used Sharans of the same age and mileage. So check the specifications closely if comparing one with the other and get the best one, no matter which brand its from.
Changes to the Petrol engines available in the Seat range are playing havoc with the used prices. The engine everyone wants and buys is the 2.0 diesel, which in SE or SE Lux trim depreciates very little in the first 18 months but then takes a hit, so that is the time to buy.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Seat Alhambra you would aim to buy a 6 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
