From certain angles the Fabia looks like a little BMW 3-Series. It is a handy size, somewhere between a little runaround and a small family car. The estate in particular strikes a good balance between carrying lots and being small enough to park anywhere.
The build quality is what you expect from a Volkswagen, but the gadgets always feel a generation behind. Does that matter? It really doesn't. The Fabia is big inside for a small car, handles impressively and because it's small never wants for power.
While there are 1.4 petrols and 1.4 TDI diesels available, the best engine is the 1.9 TDI. It only gives away 3 MPG to the 1.4 Tdi but transforms the car from just a car to an impressive part of your life - able to cope with all types of journey and load.
The only reason to not buy the 1.9 Tdi is if you want to save some money. It is up to £2,000 cheaper on the nearly new market. And if you are not planning on being on the motorway very often, the 1.4P is probably all you need.
You should never pay more than £10,000 for a Fabia, even for a very low mileage ex-demonstrator. One year old cars look like great value at under £9,000 for diesels and under £8,000 for petrols.
It should be possible to buy a 1 year old Skoda Fabia and sell it 18-24 months later having lost hardly anything to depreciation. Otherwise, it's best to wait until they have passed their MOT as they take a hit around this time.
