The Roomster looks like a rival for the Citroen Berlingo or Renault Kangoo and in a way it is. It's a much higher quality product though - and priced accordingly.
If you like the looks there is absolutely no reason not to by a Roomster. It's excellent. Offering a really well balanced drive, flexible accommodation and a great range of engines to suit all buyers.
The 1.4 petrol unit really suits this car. The £1000 or so premium you pay for a diesel just isn't worth it for the rough old 1.9 VW unit.
Just go for a 1.4 petrol in basic spec with air con. As an outside bet the 1.6 petrol auto is excellent. It offers the 6 speed autobox the VW put in much bigger cars and is very, very smooth.
Pay less than £8000 for a 3 year old 1.4 petrol Roomster. Expect to pay £200 to £300 more for a 1.6 with the automatic gearbox. Money well spent we say.
Buy at 3 years is the adivice with the Roomster. After that depreciation should be gentle.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Skoda Roomster you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Skoda Roomster cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Skoda Roomster cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Diesel Skoda Roomster cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
