The latest Superb is based on a stretched Golf platform and has been a runaway success for Skoda. The car combines a truly massive interior with good looks and a gigantic dose of equipment. The novel, dual opening hatch is brilliant.
The Superb is a true cut price luxury car. The drive is now very sharp and very comfortable, the cars are very well equipped and beloved of the mini-cabbing fraternity. In terms of reliability that is a very high recommendation indeed.
The 1.9 diesel is the model most people will consider first because of its 49MPG and proven mechanical reliability. However the 1.8T petrol model costs over £1500.00 less like on like and has 10,000 fewer miles on the clock on average.
In terms of practicality and re-sale value the 2.0 TDI model is the pick of the bunch. However the 1.8 T petrol is cheaper so it should also be considered.
Pay around £16,000 for a year old 2.0Tdi SE - you should be able to get a 1.8T for around £1000 less. A DSG box may still cost an extra £800 - even on a year old car.
Depreciation on the 2.0 Tdi model is running at a tidy 7%. The best time to buy will be at three years when the car has had its first MOT. Petrol models will depreciate slightly more but all Superbs hold their value.
