The Subaru Forester is not really and off roader and not really a family estate. It's very good indeed though. Excellent to drive, roomy and very, very tough. Off beat badge and design mean few understand it.
A strangely floppy interior, yet the Forester is a typically well screwed together Subaru. This later version is much more SUV like and is very comfortable with an excellent seating position and a massive interior.
This car is not available with a great range of spec options - an auto is now available but it's petrol only and thus cheaper. 2.0 litre 'boxer' diesel engine is brilliant but costs up to £3000 more than the petrol auto.
Pick the petrol auto model in any spec really. An absolute bargain secondhand, especially when compared to diesel versions and other comparable cars such as the VW Tiguan or Ford Kuga.
Pay around £15,000 for a 2 year old petrol, auto Forrester in basic X trim. A brilliant second hand bargain.
The best time to buy will be at 3 years old when the first MOT is due. Depreciation can run very high on petrol models in this year.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Subaru Forester you would aim to buy a 4 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Subaru Forester cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Subaru Forester cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Diesel Subaru Forester cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
