The Avensis is Toyota's rival to the Mondeo and Insignia. It is a well built, slightly dull yet well-priced alternative with high equipment levels, a good range of engines and a fitness for purpose that is second to none.
The slightly bland styling of this car hides a very well thought-through product. Surprising fun to drive the Avensis' main trump card is its high refinement. It drives very much like a 'mini Lexus' and you can't offer much higher praise than that.
The 49MPGdiesel models are the most sought after which keeps prices for these cars firm. However the much cheaper 1.8 petrol offers a creditable 39MPG and is likely to cost £1000 less with a much lower mileage to boot.
The 2.0 litre diesel and petrol T2 models are the pick of the bunch. Which you pick depends on whether the higher cost of the diesel can be met. If you intend to keep the car for many years the cheaper, lower mileage petrol is the better option.
The cheapest Avensis models are seven year old 1.8 petrol colour models at £3500 which is a bit of a bargain considering the low average mileage. A sensible mid spec T2 2.0 diesel with around 55,000 miles showing will cost £7000 at five years old.
The depreciation on these cars has leveled out now but will always be less on diesel cars. You can buy or sell at any time.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Toyota Avensis you would aim to buy a 5 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Toyota Avensis cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Toyota Avensis cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Toyota Avensis cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
