Used Toyota Yaris 2006 – Buyer’s Guide

Why buy a Used Toyota Yaris?

The second generation looks a lot fatter than the first generation Yaris. On the upside that makes it look more sophisticated, on the downside it seems less nimble, which is key if you want a car to zoom around the city in.

Like the original Yaris, this model has a spacious interior and decent boot. There are also lots of storage options. For a Toyota it is cheap to run and maintain, especially with the small petrol engines.

Which is the best used Toyota Yaris?

As with the old Yaris, the 1.0P engine is too weedy, even though it has been tuned to give a little more power for this bigger, heavier Yaris. The 1.4D is still not desperately refined and the cost of maintenance outweights the fuel economy for most.

The 1.3P provides the right balance of fuel economy (50 MPG), power (you'll notice the difference over the 1.0 if you have passengers and try to get up a semi-steep hill), and prices. Both in terms of purchase price and service prices.

Fault Checks for the Toyota Yaris

What should I aim to pay for an Toyota Yaris?

Nearly new cars are a whopping £10-£11,000. Which is a lot of money for a small car. 3 year old models drop to a more pallatable £7,000, or less with private sellers. Automatics, of which there are quite a few, will always be a bit more than the manuals.

Really, the Yaris only becomes sensible in depreciation terms when they are about 6 years old. But their average mileage is usually up to 40,000 by then. If you want something newer, it doesn't make sense to buy anything younger than three.

Toyota Yaris Prices & Depreciation – Graph - Fuel differences

Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Toyota Yaris you would aim to buy a 2 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.

Diesel Toyota Yaris cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.

Petrol Toyota Yaris cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.

Diesel Toyota Yaris cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
