It's a very tall Mk5 Golf. Beloved of milliners everywhere. Essentially the same as a Golf but with slightly more headroom and slightly floppier handling. The cars are a bit confusing for the market.
A great range of engines out of the Golf allied with slightly greater practicality and slightly lower prices make the Golf Plus a very rational purchase.
Go 1.6 petrol or 1.9 diesel with the Golf Plus. The 2.0 diesel carries a price premium of £1000 with is just not worth paying. 1.6 petrols and 1.9 diesels are comparative in price but the petrols will have lower miles and cost less to service.
You can make quite a saving if you go for a plain SE spec car on steel wheels. A sport will cost £300 more. You will get air-con though it might lack powered rear windows. Options are very expensive in the Golf Plus, both new and secondhand.
Pay around £9000 for a 3 year old 1.6 petrol or 1.9 diesel. A 2.0 TDI Sport with a DSG auto gearbox could cost up to £2000 more.
The best time to buy will be at 3 years old when the first MOT is due. Depreciation can be as high as 17% in that year.
