The dark blue M&S jumper of cars. Understated and classy, it’s not a machine that’s easy to fault, except that it has to be said but it’s duller than discussing the balance of payments with Ed Milliband.
The Passat’s character is it’s total lack of character. It will do all you and the family ask, quietly and efficiently, without going wrong or making a fuss. That makes it, when the chips are down, rather endearing.
Don’t pay the premium for diesel with this car. The best engine is the 1.8 turbo petrol. It’s unruffled smoothness suits that car and it’ll give decent MPG. A 2.0 diesel will cost you around £2,000 more and have higher miles and unreliable diesel emissions tech as standard.
SE spec is absolutely fine. You get smaller alloys which give a good ride but still look smart and you’ll have all the electronic gubbins you need. Even the basic cars want for nothing.
Pay around £12,000 for a 3 year old 1.8 petrol car with no more than 25,000 miles on the clock. It’s worth having a good look for such a car as a comparative diesel will be around £1,800 more.
Unfancied petrol cars take a slightly bigger hit nearly new, so can be picked up relatively cheaply at two years old. Diesel cars depreciate more gently and three years is the best time to buy. These cars are likely to lose value slowly thereafter.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Volkswagen Passat you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 4 years old.
Diesel Volkswagen Passat cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Volkswagen Passat cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Diesel Volkswagen Passat cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
