It feels stronger and better made than almost any other small car. It has a brand image that reflects well on its owner. But other than that, there is not much to justify its steep price point over 'value' competitors.
The ride is smooth. The seats are comfortable and the switchgear is solid. But the same can be said of more interesting cars like the Audi A2. Rear leg room is for children only and the boot space is standard for a car of this size.
If you are looking for high MPG then the 1.4 diesel is for you. It's slow but offers 57 MPG and bullet-proof reliability.
If you want to make a value buy then the 1.2 petrols are much overlooked, especially in 3 door trim. The prices on these are surprisingly soft for Volkswagens, especially once they are past M.O.T. age.
Three year old 3 door 1.2 petrols are under £5,000 with average mileage of 20,000 miles. Three year old 1.4 diesel with 3 doors have a much higher average mileage of 30,000 and are only just under £7,000. 5 door versions are another £400.
The increasingly out-of-date image makes the Polo less desirable and so the depreciation pattern is erratic. But 3 year old cars are good value. 5 years old is an expensive anniversary. So sell before it's 4 and a half or buy after it's fifth birthday.
