The VW Touareg is a huge SUV which is closely related to the Porsche Cayenne, though it looks much, much more conservative. Accommodation is excellent and the car is very refined.
The Touareg is very nice to drive on road and it can get pretty far in the rough stuff as well. The cabin is stand-out excellent in terms of refinement and comfort. The handling is better than a Land rover Discovery, but it still handles like a barge. But then it weighs as much as barge, so what do you expect? Don't drive it fast and you'll love it.
The massive majority of cars on the market are powered by the excellent 3.0 VW turbo diesel. Petrols are to be found and can be a comparative bargain if you take into account original new price, mileage and spec.
Don't worry about the fuel bills. Pick a 3.0 V6 petrol over diesel - the huge cost saving in the price will negate any fuel bill worries. If you can’t find one, the diesel is great but you’ll find it has higher miles on the clock.
Pay £28,000 for a 3 year old 3.0 diesel Touareg, which is when condition and price reach a sweet spot. If you want a bargain though, go for a petrol that is over four years. Despite being rare, they are incredibly cheap.
Touaregs get through cash faster than Charlie Sheen. The depreciation graph looks like it is plotting someone jumping off a cliff from day one. Diesel cars lose most in the first two years, so buy after that. If you buy a nearly new petrol, sell before the fourth birthday when prices crash.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Volkswagen Touareg you would aim to buy a 4 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.
Diesel Volkswagen Touareg cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Volkswagen Touareg cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Volkswagen Touareg cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
