Used Volkswagen Touareg 2003 – Buyer’s Guide

Why buy a Used Volkswagen Touareg?

The VW Tourag is a huge SUV which is closely related to the Porsche Cayenne though it looks much, much better. Accommodation is excellent and the car is very refined.

The Tourag is very nice to drive on road and it can get pretty far in the rough stuff as well. The cabin is stand-out excellent and the ride great. It handles like a barge but then it does weigh as much as one. Don't drive it fast and you'll love it.

Which is the best used Volkswagen Touareg?

Early cars are mostly a mix of 2.5 diesels and 3.2 and 4.2 petrols. The petrol cars are a proper bargain. The early 2.5 diesel engines don't suit the Tourag and are very rough. The 5.0 V10 diesel is way too mad.

Don't worry about the fuel bills. Pick an early 4.2 petrol over a late model diesel - the huge cost saving in the price will negate any fuel bill worries. Also the 4.2 engine is lovely and those cars have every option.

Fault Checks for the Volkswagen Touareg

What should I aim to pay for an Volkswagen Touareg?

Pay £14,000 for a 6 year old 4.2 petrol. You could pay £4000 more for a similar diesel model but why would you?

Petrol cars get through cash faster than Charlie Sheen. It's off a cliff from day one. Diesel cars hold on well and you can safely get one a 3 years knowing it won't lose that much.

Volkswagen Touareg Prices & Depreciation – Graph - Fuel differences

Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Volkswagen Touareg you would aim to buy a 3 year old and you can keep it for some time before needing to worry about a big drop in value.

Diesel Volkswagen Touareg cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.

Petrol Volkswagen Touareg cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.

Petrol Volkswagen Touareg cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
