The Focus based S40 is a very good junior executive car that makes real sense when compared to rivals such as the BMW 3 Series. A very refined car with a superbly light and unique interior, the S40 comes highly recommended.
The S40 has a great range of Ford derived engines and rides fantastically. It's handling is a weak spot but that is its only criticism.
Huge savings (up to £1000 on average) are to be made on petrol S40s. The 1.8 makes real sense as this is a very economical engine - tough and cheaper to insure than the 2.0 diesel. Also the average mileage on these cars is likely to be much lower.
We would recommend S or SE spec on the Volvo S40. Sport trim will set you back £300 and the big wheels and sport suspension do the ride no favours.
A 3 year old 1.8 petrol in SE trim will cost £9000. You will pay £1000 to £1200 more for a 2.0 diesel.
The best time to buy is either nearly new (but sell at two and a half years) or at 3 years old when the first MOT is due year.
