Volvo's full size saloon. Sober and quiet - handling is not up to the class best but the interior is second to none. Diesels fast and frugal, V8's monstrous and beloved of constabularies up and down the country.
The S80 is very refined vehicle. It is aimed at those who don't want to compete with the BMW's and Audi's of this world. Extremely comfortable and cosseting over a long journey. The seats are the best in the business.
The 2.4 SE Geartronic model is by far the most popular and most likely to retain its value. The 3.2 V6 and 4.4 V8 petrol models have high C02 and fuel costs but this makes them much, much cheaper.
If you intend to sell the car on again relatively quickly then the 2.4 diesel auto is the obvious choice as it will hold on to its value. If the car is to be retained for the long term the petrol models make the most sense. Particularly the high spec V8.
The Volvo loses far more value far more quickly than the German competitors. Expect to pay around £8500 to £9000 for an early D5 auto up to £26,000 for a nearly new version. In contrast a fully loaded three year old V8 petrol can be had for £12,000.
