A massive selling large 4X4 from Volvo that has been incredibly popular both new and used since Volvo launched it nearly 10 years ago. Very, very practical and safe the XC90 makes unbeatable family transport.
The XC90 was the first big SUV to offer a fully realised 7 seat option and it's still the most practical car in its class. It can be a little woolly to drive but it can deal equally well with the school run and cross-continental trips. A great car.
The 2.9 petrols cars are the cheapest. 4.4 petrol V8 XC90s seem to be roughly similar to 2.4 diesel of the same vintage though the V8 cars have less miles and much, much more spec. Petrols are much nicer to drive.
Go for a 2.9 petrol in SE spec. It's possibly the best compromise though if you really do a lot of miles then go diesel.
Pay no more than £15,000 for a 5 year old 2.9 turbo petrol SE with no more than 45,000 miles showing.
A petrol XC90 will lose value very quickly so buy a t 3 years. With diesel you can buy and sell at any time, prices are firm.
Used Car Expert recommends that you try to buy after a big drop in depreciation and before the next one, so with the current Volvo Xc90 you would aim to buy a 3 year old and sell it before it is 5 years old.
Diesel Volvo Xc90 cars lose most over the first year (from new to 1 year old), so that is the best ‘nearly new’ buy in terms of car for money.
Petrol Volvo Xc90 cars lose least between years 1 and 3, so this is the best buy if you want to keep the car for a while.
Petrol Volvo Xc90 cars lose least between years 2 and 4, so that is the best buy on older cars.
