VW is looking for a share of the family-sized pickup market with the Amarok, which will launch here next year.
The company believes the pickup’s efficient drive technology and versatility will make it a winner in the class.
The tough new four wheel drive will be put to the test as the support vehicle for the Dakar rally in January and prices and specifications will be confirmed nearer the UK launch.
It comes with a payload of 1.15 tonnes and maximum towing weight of 2.8 tonnes, and the the 2.52 cubic metre cargo area is the largest in class.
As well as the four wheel drive model, it will also be available with two wheel drive.
Under the bonnet will be a choice of two, 2.0-litre TDI engines producing either 163 or 122bhp.
Both have six-speed manual transmission and VW claims most have exhaust emissions of less than 200g/km.
Interior
Inside, it bristles with little luxuries and the double-cab model will boast the largest interior in the class.
The company claims that with an interior resembling a car, it will also have easy entry, lots of headroom and ample legroom.
