A NEW dual-charged petrol engine delivering185PS  is at the heart of Audi’s new A1 range performance flagship due to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on October 2.

The 1.4 TFSI unit, in a car up for grabs before the turn of the year, combines a supercharger with turbo power to give the compact hatchback a sub-seven second 0-62mph acceleration time.

But despite that power - channelled through a standard seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission – the A1 is still expected to return an average 47.9 miles per gallon plus low CO2 emissions of 139g/km.

Predicted figures have the Audi capable of hitting 62mph in 6.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 141mph.

As pace builds the supercharger intervenes at 1,500rpm to increase thrust, and in most cases disengages at 2,400rpm, to be followed from around 3,500rpm by the turbocharger kicking in with another surge of power.

And as the supercharger takes care of low-range punch, it has been possible to use a larger turbocharger designed for optimum efficiency which, says Audi, is reflected in the strong fuel economy and low emissions.

Performance-oriented S line suspension forms part of the standard spec for the 1.4 TFSI 185PS model, and includes the likes of an exclusive S line exterior treatment, 17-inch alloy wheels and part leather-upholstered sports seats.

That’s in addition to the Sport equipment level which already includes remote central locking, air-con, electric front windows and mirrors, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, info display and a six-speaker single CD audio system with auxiliary iPod connection.

Prices have yet to be confirmed.
