Question

Hi Matt.

I've found a car I'm very interested in. It has previously been recorded as Cat D Damage, since repaired. Looks great to a laymen such as me, however I'd want assurance on safety and condition, which I will also need when I come to sell the car.

It's £29, 000 - so I want to limit the risk! Its an M3 SMG Convertible, 55 plate, great spec, has a footballer on log book who 'shoved it into a hedge' as the dealer says! I did an HPI, he also did one on line while I was there.

But he has no inspection yet and expects to sell the car without. He's happy for me to do the inspection, although obviously I will pay. Have looked around for BMW Inspection Specialists, but no joy.

Can you please advise if you recommend a specific pre-purchase inspection service?

Answer

Hi Paul,

In my experience expensive car inspections are a rip-off. I once had a car breakdown two hours after a leading motoring organization inspected it. Their small print ensured that there was no comeback against them.

Rather than pay £150 - £250 for an inspection I would take the car to a BMW specialist or main dealer and ask them to do an M.O.T. That will cost £50 and they will tell you everything you need to know. You should also call the garage that did the repairs and ask what they know about the car.
