We have driven Toyota Land Cruisers for years: we have two small children, three large dogs and live in a village where no gritter ever goes, so it ticks all the boxes for practicality. Downside? Costs a fortune to run and getting the evil eye from 'Chelsea Tractor' bandwagonners. What would you recommend for a 4x4 devotee who wants something cheaper and greener with a huge boot capacity that doesn't mind being bounced around country lanes?

Answer
You need a Land Rover with a key optional extra. I grew up in Norfolk, and provided you have this optional extra a Land Rover will not get frowned at.
Go for a 2.7 Discover or 2.0 Freelander to get your running costs down to 60p-70p, rather than the 90p per mile that your Land Cruiser will be costing you.
And just add mud. With mud you look like a local farmer and they need 4x4s.
