Chevrolet Orlando 2.0 VCDi LTZ - Car Review

EVER since the middle of the 1990s with the emergence of the Ford Galaxy and VW Sharan the Multi Purpose Vehicle has steadily made its presence felt in the UK.

The latest member to join the MPV club is the Chevrolet Orlando. A cross between an MPV and a crossover vehicle, this is a first for GM’s European arm bringing to market  the concept car first seen back in 2008.

The Orlando comes with a trio of engines from which to choose. The petrol model is a 1.8-litre and there are a brace of diesels - both 2.0-litre but produce different bhp, of 128 and 161.

Buyers can also opt for one of three generously progressive trim levels, LS, LT and LTZ and the car driven here is the 2.0-litre 161bhp diesel in range topping trim which includes the likes of an effective climate control system, sat nav, audio with MP3 and iPod connectivity, cruise control plus automatic headlights and pulls 161bhp via a six-speed automatic gearbox.

High, wide and handsome, with chunky good looks the Orlando is quite a head turner as MPVs go. Thedistinctly recognisable Chevrolet face is complemented by a sweeping low roofline and muscular wheel arches and, along with a practical and spacious cabin comes a generous load bay of some 435 litres with all seats taken.

There is plenty of stowage space and the Chevrolet design team has created a range of compartments of different shapes, sizes and locations including a coin holder, two large cup holders in the centre console, map and bottle holders in front and rear doors plus a number of hidy holes within the cargo area itself while personal items such as MP3 player, sunglasses and wallets can be hidden away from unwanted prying eyes in a safe cache behind the sound system in the facia.

A comprehensive list of safety specifications includes the likes of six airbags, ABS braking, traction control, electronic stability control, even an extra wide angle rear view mirror which helps you keep a watchful eye over the youngsters on board.

Comfortable 'cinema-style' seating, with both second and third rows having been raised, is a further boon allowing occupants an even better all round view. A number of seating configurations are also available with the second and third rows folding independently or together with the aid of built in hydraulics to deliver a completely flat load area for increased cargo carrying.

Row two also features a tumble/fold facility for both left and right outer seats to allow easier access for passengers into and out of the back row of seats which I found much more adult friendly than some members of the MPV genre I have experienced.

The high driving position proved excellent delivering some outstanding overall visibility while the neatly positioned dials with attractive blue back lighting made for an agreeably user friendly dashboard.

Although not the quickest kid on the tarmac, the 2.0-litre diesel uses its 161bhp to move you from 0-62mph in under 10 seconds. There is plenty of mid range urge on tap and thoughtful drivers can expect a just under 50mpg return on average.

Some good strong acceleration is available, too, making life in the overtaking lane pretty enjoyable.

The Orlando handles well and is surprisingly dynamic, with  accurate and nicely weighted power steering making this particular driver pretty happy after an involving and rewarding 150-mile session of mixed driving.

With cabin noise nicely toned down progress proved comfortably enjoyable throughout the journey which was very composed and relaxed when you take into account the size of the vehicle.

Overall, the Chevrolet Orlando holds much appeal for the family. It’s agreeably priced from £18,645 and with good looks inside and out while practical and flexible to boot, this latest General Motors offering has much to commend it.
