THE next generation Ford Kuga, due to arrive in Britain next year, has been unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

Named the Escape for the American market where it will go on sale first, the car will shown in Geneva next March and come with new engines and more space than before.

While SUVs are commonly known as sports utility vehicles, Ford is calling its newcomer a Smarter Utility Vehicle.

Or as group vice president Derrick Kuzak says: β€œIt offers the strengths that customers today really value – fuel economy, versatility and new technology that makes driving and living with the vehicle easier and more fun – all wrapped in a sleek, more modern design.”

Ford says the Escape boasts 11 features no other small SUV offers, including a hands-free power liftgate that allows access to cargo with the kick of a foot and enabled by motion technology used in video games.

There will also be a new Ford Intelligent 4WD system for better traction off-road, a sleek new design, better interior materials and internet connectivity.

Active park assist, whereby the car parks itself and the sensor-based Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert are also features of the new, longer car.

Engines in the US will be either 2.0-litre or 1.6 EcoBoost petrol units plus a 2.5-litre four cylinder powertrain, and though the UK line-up has yet to be announced it will include diesels.

Ford says the new model is nearly 10 per cent more aerodynamic than the outgoing car and features an active grille shutter system to reduce wind resistance.

There will also be appreciably more passenger and luggage space and the seats have been designed to fold flat easily.

A two-position boot, which can be configured for maximum luggage volume or flat load floor, will also be available.
