My wife and I are agreed that we would like an estate car for our young family, perhaps a Volvo. We have £6,000 or so and want to get the most value for our money. What advice can you offer on where to look, what to go for. Also, my wife also wants a dark metallic colour and parking sensors! Is this possible?

If you like Volvos, then £6,000 will buy a beautiful 2003 1.8 SE. You should look for private sellers, so you get more for your money. You need to be comparing five or six cars in your area. You want the best combination of condition, service history and mileage. But you really cannot put colour too high on your wish list. Also, these cars won’t have parking sensors as standard. But you can get them fitted retrospectively by specialists (just surf the web). Perhaps you can compromise on the colour if you get the sensors fitted?
