THE Ford Fiesta retained its place at the top of the sales chart as new car registrations rose for the second time in the past year last month

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reveal that the market rose 3,449 units to 134,944 during October, nearly 9,000 units ahead of the forecast.

Nonetheless, volumes remain almost 20 per cent short of the level recorded in 2007, prior to recession.

The SMMT puts the October success down to a sharp recovery in the small car markets, with the supermini segment up 17.4 per cent.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Golf was the best selling diesel model last month as demand for diesel and alternatively fuelled cars remained stable and petrol cars – helped by growth in small car segments – picked up.

While the Fiesta led the way overall with 7,308 models sold, it was followed closely by arch rival the Vauxhall Corsa on 6,300.

Next came the Ford Focus on 5,205, the Golf on 4,400 and Vauxhall Astra on 4,159. Best selling executive model was the BMW 3 Series with 3,664.

SMMT chief Paul Everitt said: “October’s new car market rose 2.6 per cent on last year – a positive result despite the uncertain economic climate.

“Vehicle manufacturers and their dealer networks are working hard to offer consumers value for money through improved fuel efficiency, low running costs and innovative finance.

“We expect market conditions to remain challenging and hope the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement later this month will help to boost economic growth and consumer confidence.”
