Question

I have owned my Renaultsport Clio 197 since September 06, it was an ex-demo with about 900 miles. However last month the engine blew-up (I was later told piston one had failed). The car was returned to the dealer, who ordered a new engine and then started about installing a new engine under warranty, and after waiting a full month I now have the car back. The service I received from both the dealer and RUK left a lot to be desired. Many of my calls where not returned, the whole process seemed like I had to fight each step of the way in order to get anywhere. When the car was finally ready the engine bay and under trays where not clean of the old oil, which the dealer seemed to think was fine, although I managed to get them to clean it up for the next day!

After numerous complaints to both the dealer and RUK, RUK have offered £250 in the way of compensation. Would this be a fair deal, after all the stress and sleepless nights worrying about my pride and joy? I'm not so sure. It has left me more than a bit reluctant to keep my car or buy another Renault. Do a lot of people complain about Renaults? Would you advise buying one as my next car?

Answer

Renault is no better or worse, on balance, than any other mainstream manufacturer. I do understand how frustrating and tiring this kind of problem can be; I had to go all the way to the small claims court once. It can be exhausting and even when you win, it doesn’t always feel worth it.

You need to pick your battle. It may be too late on this one, but in the future if you have what looks like a big problem, choose your repairer carefully.

Rather than going to the nearest or biggest main dealer, choose a smaller outfit where you can speak to someone senior. Build rapport with them and work with them on the manufacturer together. If you are battling both the dealer and manufacturer you have no chance.

In this case, I would take the £250 and move on.
