Question

I am very keen to buy an isofix car seat but have an audi a4 avant 2003 which does not have isofix-what i have been trying to find out is can you get this installed? And will it mean i have to take out a bigger mortgage? none of my local garages know what i am talking about and think that the sleepless nights of endless crying may be interferring with my normally quite sane mind! I would be incredibly grateful for some help on this if not to just reassure my sanity. Many thanks.

Answer

Hello,
For the benefit of your sloppy dealer, ISOFIX stands for "International Standards Organisation FIX". It is a new standard which is being adopted by vehicle manufacturers.
When cars are manufactured, ISOFIX points are built into them. This enables ISOFIX child seats to be simply plugged into the ISOFIX points in the car.
ISOFIX is an essential development because surveys have found that a high proportion of child seats are not fitted securely enough.
Isofix was a paid for option on the Audi A4 2003, so some will have them. But they cannot be retro-fitted because they are built into the car seat.
So I’m afraid you need to consider changing the car…
