Question

Dear Sir
I bought a new Mazda 3 1.6.diesel on 19th January. I have driven 7,250 miles. There is a 3 year warranty. Car broke down Monday 29th October. Garage says we may have to pay for clutch. My husband and I have over a 100 years driving experience and in all that time we have had only two clutches go. I cannot believe our driving has altered and the mileage is so small we do not believe we are at fault. What are our rights?

Answer

Hello Mrs John,

This sounds very frustrating; I am surprised that the manufacturer is not just sorting this out for you. Unless there is something exceptional I don’t know about your driving, the clutch should have lasted much longer. You should push to have this covered by warranty. As the car is still under manufacturer's warranty, you should contact the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders: www.smmt.co.uk. Telephone: 0870 751 8270.

If that doesn't work, you should contact Consumer Direct for advice on your rights: www.consumerdirect.gov.uk. Telephone: 08454 04 05 06.
