BIGGER on the inside, smaller on the outside – that’s the promise from Peugeot ahead of the summertime arrival of its new 208 supermini.
The range, due for a June launch, heralds a new generation of engines that sees the e-HDi diesels cutting emissions to a mere 87g/km and the new petrol units to 99g/km.
It will be available in both three and five-door body styles and a Stop/Start system will accompany the diesel-powered models, the most frugal of which has the potential to return 83.1 miles per gallon.
The 208 also introduces a new range of three-cylinder petrol units - 1.0- and 1.2-litre Vti - which are especially efficient, with a line-up starting at 99g/km of CO2 and delivering 65.7mpg.
Peugeot is also maintaining its environmental performance with 25 per cent of ‘green’ materials - recycled or of natural origin - making up its mass of polymers.
As a world first, the rear bumper and the fan assembly are made entirely using these materials, this type of bumper alone saving 1,600 tonnes of energy a year in manufacturing.
Despite more compact dimensions, Peugeot has still managed to increase the 208’s occupant space with more room in the rear seats plus more generous boot space.
Style-wise, the model’s ‘floating’ grille and ‘boomerang’ rear lights have been refined, there’s now an elevated instrument panel giving information at a glance and a large touch screen with the option of sat-nav.
More detailed information and prices will be released closer to the launch date.
