I've been offered a '54 Plate Audi A4 Avant (auto, sport 1.9 tdi) with around 15K on the clock for £14K, but am undecided as to whether I should go for it or a slightly older E class C220 or c270 cdi for the same money and more toys?

I am not sure if you are considering the E220 and E280 or the C220 and C270? Or all of them?

In a year or two when the new C-Class is established on the used market, it will be a really good alternative to the A4. But the older C-Class is not on the same level. So this age A4 is the winner, although I would want a bigger engine. You can wait all day for the 1.9 tdi to get going.

Comparing an older E220 with the A4 is like comparing oranges and apples. The Merc is a big old barge of a cruiser and would be my choice for motorway work. The Audi is a mid-size all-rounder that would be my choice for everyday motoring.
