CHEVROLET is to enter the competitive compact MPV market with a seven seat model which is due on sale next year.

The Orlando, up against the likes of the new Ford C-Max and VW Touran, will first be seen at October’s Paris Motor Show.

Based on Chevrolet’s Cruze saloon, the people mover will be available with a choice of three engines - a 1.8 litre, 141bhp petrol and two diesels developing either 131 or 163bhp.

Four trim levels will be offered in the UK with standard equipment on all models including electronic stability control, six air-bags, air conditioning and electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors.

The Orlando has three rows of seats with the rear two slightly raised to improve visibility. It also features an innovative storage area concealed in the facia behind the audio system.

The car was first shown as a concept model at the Paris show two years ago and is now ready to go into production as Chevrolet - part of General Motors - recovers from the global recession.

Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe, said: "The new Orlando MPV kicks off an ambitious seven-product launch program over the next 15 months.

"We're confident the Orlando not only brings great value for money to the MPV class but also something fresh - function with attitude if you like.”

Chevrolet says the Orlando will be on sale in Britain by next spring. Pricing and exact specifications are still to be announced.
