Hello, I have been looking for either a Honda S2000 or a Porsche Boxter as a weekend car for about 2 months now, but have so far drawn a blank for the budget of £15k-£16k that I have set myself. I have a preference to buy from either a Porsche or Honda outlet in the hope that I have less chance of ending up with a rogue car.
In terms of driving fun, running costs and long term problems should I be concentrating on either the Honda or the Porsche?
Also, as I intend to keep the car for quite a while, which car is likely to lose less value over say the next 5 years.

Answer
Stephen, yours is a high-quality problem. These are two excellent cars. They are very different, but equally good to drive.
Your budget will buy a 2002 2.7 litre Porsche Boxster with 50,000 miles (or a 1999 3.2 litre with 80,000 miles but let’s not make this complicated). The alternative is a 2003 2.0i Honda S2000 with just 40,000 miles. The later has 237 bhp to the Porsche’s 228 bhp. Over five years, they are both going to lose about £5,000.
The Porsche is reliable but the Honda is bullet-proof. So if you are buying with your head you will go for the S2000. But if you want people to talk to you at parties, you will buy the Boxster. I have a sneaking suspicion that S2000 says ‘geek’ to the ill-informed.
