THE Ford Transit is still a knockout, says boxing legend Sir Henry Cooper.
The former heavyweight champion was guest of honour at the official celebrations to mark the van’s 45th anniversary.
Sir Henry drove one of the original Transits when he helped out with his family’s fruit and veg business in London back in the 1960s.
“It was a great motor. We never had a ha’peth of trouble with it,” said Sir Henry, who appeared in one of Ford’s early advertising campaigns for the Transit.
“Our Transit was a great workhorse and good to drive, but the ones today are even better and just like a car inside.”
The three-time BBC Sports Personality of the Year, who became Britain’s first boxing knight in 2000, said that the Transit was an integral part of the family business and was regularly used by himself and his brother George to carry boxes of bananas.
“In the end we sold the business and the van went with it,” said Sir Henry.
