GO-AHEAD Korean car maker Hyundai is about to break new ground with its latest coupe, the Veloster.
When the car goes on sale later this year it will feature a unique ‘two plus one’ door set-up whereby there’s a single door on the driver’s side but an additional rear one on the passenger side for better access.
And if that sounds odd, it certainly doesn’t look it because there’s a hidden exterior door handle to maintain the stylish coupe design.
The Veloster is being shown for the first time at the Detroit Motor Show before making its European debut at Geneva in March.
It is based on a concept revealed at the 2007 Seoul show, and keeps the spirit of the original concept while also representing Hyundai’s new thinking in 2011.
Clearly aimed at younger buyers, the Veloster has a striking appearance with its blacked-out pillars, bonnet scoop, hezagonal front grille and wraparound headlights while at the rear a distinctive glass hatch and centre-mounted exhaust complete a sporty look.
The Veloster will be available with Hyundai’s latest powertrain technology, including the company’s first six-speed double-clutch transmission.
And equipped with a new 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine, there’s the promise of high fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.
It will also benefit from Hyundai’s Five Year Triple Care package that includes a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, five years’ roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.
More details on Veloster, including powertrain and specification for the European market, will be available later.
