VOLKSWAGEN’S latest looks set to be the pathfinder for a series of new small cars if the signs at the recent Frankfurt show are anything to go by.
Called the up!, it’s a three door hatchback that should be a decent rival for the all conquering Fiat 500, without being as sporty.
There was a concept with rear engine and rear wheel drive with the same name a few years ago, but the new model has a more conventional brand-new 1.0-litre three cylinder front wheel drive setup.
There will be two power outputs, one with 59bhp, which is likely to be very slow but have emissions of under 100g/km, and a more useable 74bhp.
There’s no shortage of technology, with a detachable sat nav unit costing less than £350, which clicks onto a dashboard mount.
It not only gives directions but synchronises with the cars telematics to show eco-driving tips and telephone.
For around an extra £180, there’s even an automatic braking system, which is active at speeds of up to 20mph.
Interior
Despite its small size, there seems to be good practicality, with VW claiming a full four seats inside thanks to a long wheelbase.
That’s means it’s a good deal bigger than the Fiat and far better than VW’s last city car the Lupo, which was essentially a two seater.
