FORD recently launched an all-new C-MAX, and arch rivals Vauxhall have just countered with the new Zafira.

But don’t get sucked in by the hype - there is not much these new motors can do that the originals can’t, except relieve you of more money.

The Ford C-Max costs £20,995 in two-litre diesel top trim Titanium form. When the new Zafira is launched early next year it is likely to be similar money.

A three-year old version, while it may lack a few gadgets, fundamentally does all you need for a stress-free school run, particularly if you choose the right spec and engine type.

Go for a petrol automatic.

A petrol engine is much better suited to small journeys like the school run as there is simply a lot less to go wrong and no diesel particulate filter to clog up.

The great thing is that these cars are much cheaper than the diesel versions and much more reliable.

Consider these three:

Ford C-MAX
Based on the current Focus chassis it offers exceptional driving characteristics, comfortable accommodation for five, good safety and a cheap asking price. Especially if you go for a petrol model – the lower purchase price will more than offset any fuel economy advantages.

UsedCarExpert.co.uk price guide: A well looked after 2.0 petrol auto with very low miles – at four years old should be £6,700.

Vauxhall Zafira
Unlike the Ford, it has seven seats. It’s a very refined car – well built and well planned out. There’s masses of room and endless cubbyholes for the kids to hide chewing gum in. As a petrol automatic it’s very, very cheap, as a diesel it’s still inexpensive.

UsedCarExpert.co.uk price guide: A well looked after 2.0 petrol auto with average miles – at four years old should be £7,800..

Renault Scenic
The Scenic is much cheaper than the other two, despite being the newest design as it came out in 2010. The Scenic is stylish, comfortable and economical – it’s a car we like very much. The cheapest new car we could find at UsedCarExpert.co.uk was a 1.5 diesel at £16,000.

UsedCarExpert.co.uk price guide: A nearly new 1.6 petrol Scenic with around 10,000 miles on the clock should be no more than £11,500.
