MENTION the name Alfa Romeo and you are guaranteed to get fanatics brimming with excitement and prepared to drive hundreds of miles for a rally meeting.

Personally, I can't quite put my finger on the massive attraction. OK, so it's great fun to drive, has acceleration that will make your hair stand on end and a whole host of features that would not be out of place in any luxury saloon, but drive miles to a rally to meet other owners? I don't think so.

Maybe the big attraction is the Italian finesse. After all, the dash is littered with little clues to its origin. For example, instead of a fuel gauge there is the Benzina, instead of the temperature gauge there is Acqua°C - I'll leave you to work out what Olio°C stands for.

But one thing you are guaranteed with an Alfa Romeo is breathtaking performance. With more revolutions than the French, the 159 simply oozes power and strength.

Although I feel the previous 156 holds the road slightly better, the 159 is an awesome performer and on the open road proves an absolute dream to drive.

The six-speed gearbox is very responsive and good all-round visibility makes manoeuvrability a real doddle.

Added to this, the comfort levels are excellent although a little bone-rattling at times - still, that's part of the fun attached to a performance car.

Despite being an estate car, the 159 is a looker that turns heads with its distinctive design, smooth lines, light clusters and instantly-recognisable identity badge.

Combining the best of both worlds, it offers sporty features along with an abundance of space for passengers and plenty of luggage too - this load capacity is extremely impressive when the rear seats are folded down.

And as one might expect, the safety features are excellent with anti-lock brakes, numerous airbags including one for knees, a fire prevention system and parking sensors.

All in all, the 159 is a great fun drive that also offers excellent safety features along with versatility.
