What to look for:
Check for smoke from the exhaust when the engine is under power. If possible have the vendor rev the engine for you – if not, keep a careful eye in the rear view mirror when accelerating.
What it means:
This smoke is likely to be caused by a problem with the Exhaust Gas Re-circulation valves. These can get stuck open, causing the engine to run hot – hence the smoke.
What to do
If you find this fault and the car is under warranty (3 years – 3rd year is dealer warranty) then Alfa Romeo may fix it for free. Otherwise, try to negotiate a discount of £580 off of the price of the car.
