AUDI says that the latest incarnation of the car that created a premium class within the compact sector will be even more sophisticated when it arrives here this summer.
The company claims that its A3 model, which has attracted almost two million buyers in just five years, was the first to arrive in the premium compact sector that is now occupied by later rivals such as the BMW 1 Series.
When the latest generation of the A3 arrives it will herald several new-technology firsts including S-tronic dual-clutch transmission with seven speeds as well as a magnetic ride suspension control system.
The sporty S3 model becomes available as a five-door Sportback for the first time to top the range, which is revised in appearance.
Nothing too drastic but the bonnet lid and front wings are more sculpted and the bumper and large single-frame radiator grille have been updated to generate greater road presence.
New headlamps incorporate a curved trim element known as the "wing" which Audi modestly says accentuates their technical perfection.
New exterior mirrors with integral indicators, new door handles and a distinctive new alloy wheel range complete the package.
There will be four petrol and three diesel engines, with both two-litre diesel engines being extensively re-engineered using a new common rail injection system whilst the petrol-fuelled 1.8 TFSI and the 2.0 TFSI have been optimised to increase efficiency.
Most models have six-speed manual transmissions as standard whilst the 1.6 and 1.9 TDI are fitted with a five-speed manual transmission and there is optional dual-clutch S-tronic that can operate in a fully automatic mode or via shift paddles on the leather sport steering wheel.
Prices of the new A3 range have yet to be announced.
