THE first Audi A3 had a bit of an unfinished look to my eyes but the second series is much sharp and svelte.
They have real sporting handling, they drive superbly and there is a huge range to choose from.
They are easy to drive, with well-placed, light controls, a quick gearchange, a light clutch and marvellously tactile power steering.
Even the base 1.6 is fun, and of course, as you go up the scale, performance only gets better, with a 147bhp 2.0-litre, or a storming 197bhp of the same with a turbo.
Topping the range is a 246bhp 3.2-litre V6 that is an absolute gem to drive if a little thirsty.
Diesels are 1.9 and 2.0-litre units with power ranging from 103 to 140 and 170bhp and the higher output units are best for performance with economy.
Strong image and excellent build quality mean high secondhand prices, but there are few better ways into the premium car market.
Interior
Audi quality fit and finish is always top notch, and controls are all well to hand. It has a good ride over most surfaces, with hip and back hugging front seats.
The boot is deep but narrow, rear legroom is not up to much if there are tall people in front, and as with all others, rear access is never elegant in the three door.
