DESPITE the economic crisis continuing to beset global markets, Audi continues its remarkable roll in the creation of new or refreshed models.

The latest addition to the German car giant's portfolio is a new generation of the hugely popular A3 models of which can be ordered now for delivery mid-December.

Instantly identifiable from the current A3 courtesy of a more sculpted bonnet and front wings, the newcomer's presence is further enhanced by the larger radiator grille flanked by new headlights incorporating a curved trim called the Wing in Audi-speak.

A modified tailgate, reworked bumper and new tail lights add to the back view adopting a cleaner look.

Audi does cabins exceedingly well and the inside shows off a cabin where the design teams have administered fine-tuning to the premium feel of the car, while with 350-litres of stowage space the A3 retains its roomy boot.

The new generation A3 Hatchback and Sportback models offer seven engine options - four petrol and a trio of diesels - and a recent test of the A3 Sportback, with an on-the-road price of £25,645, provides the kind of driver enjoyment you get from being in a car where virtually everything feels absolutely right.

The exterior bears some striking good looks, while - from an easily arrived at optimum driving position where overall vision is good.

There are some very elegant and practical design elements, including the sporty feel of a dashboard instrument cluster with black dials and red needles, plus a shift indicator displaying the recommended gear in the driver information system.

Paired with a slick-switching six-speed S-tronic dual clutch transmission and permanent all-wheel drive via the electronically controlled quattro system, the 2.0-litre FSI petrol engine provesa joy, delivering the 0-62mph in well under seven seconds, a top speed of 147mph and a reasonable return for the size of powertrain of a little under 40mpg over the combined driving cycle.

Good to drive, the A3 Sportback helped inject plenty of the fun factor into an enjoyable drive, during which the hugely competent and well balanced newcomer showed off some fine grip and good body control in the bends while remaining comfortably supportive.

In addition to the generous menu of standard kit, including the likes of electric windows and door mirrors, air con and four-speaker sound system with CD, there are a number of optional extras which included a new 'parking assistant' which can spot a satisfactory parking space as you drive past, leaving the driver to then engage reverse and allow the system to guide the car automatically into the parking space.
