HAVING recently tried the excellent Audi A4 saloon, I was eager to try out the estate version - and the Avant 2.0-litre diesel didn't disappoint.
The third generation of the model was launched in the summer with Audi doing more than just tinkering at the edges.
Instead the Germans have given the A4 Avant a much improved interior and load space, as well as beefing up the driving dynamics.
The all-new sleek and sporty body shell turns heads wherever it goes - gone are the days when estate versions of popular saloons were consigned to the 'practical but boring' shelf.
Its dimensions are bigger all round than its predecessor, with rear passengers now having ample leg and shoulder room.
You'll also be able to load as many bags of shopping as you wish with Audi claiming a class-leading maximum of 1,430 litres of space for the A4 Avant, while a not to be sniffed at 490 litres is available with all seats in use.
But space is nothing without quality. Audi realise this so the materials used in the A4 Avant's cabin are good with soft-touch plastics and decent upholstery making it a pleasant place to be.
The driving position is excellent thanks to a wide range of adjustment for the seat and steering wheel and life is further made easier by all the controls being logically arranged. Unlike some competitors Audi's MMI central control system is easy to use.
The real joy of this estate though comes when you are driving it. Get behind the wheel and the A4 Avant is a revelation with excellent handling and cornering as the car manoeuvres with the dexterity of a sports car.
The diesel engine is magnificent - ably assisted by seamless gear changes orchestrated by the automatic transmission.
Audi expects the oil burner to be the best-seller and with a winning combination of performance and economy it's easy to see why.
There are three trim levels with the SE likely to prove the most popular offering goodies that include a CD player, alloy wheels and electric windows and door mirrors. In addition a 10-speaker stereo, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic lights and wipers, plus dual zone climate control help justify the price-tag of a shade over £24,000.
This particular car was fitted with another £10,000-worth of optional extras, including an easy-to-use sat nav system, so it is clear there's plenty of opportunity to splash even more cash.
Prices for the new A4 Avant start at £23,300 for the 2.0 TDI 120bhp standard - moving up to the 3.2 FSI quattro S line which will set you back £32,990.
The A4 Avant covers all the bases when it comes to safety boasting six airbags and stability control as standard. Rear side airbags are available as an option, as are lane-departure and blind spot-warning systems.
This is definitely one for the short-list if you are considering buying a premium estate.
