Audi A5 Coupe 2.0 TDI Quattro S line - Audi A5 Car Review

First the bad news. The Audi A5 is a bit cramped in the back and it isn't cheap - although it does compare more than favourably with direct competitors from BMW and Mercedes.

Otherwise you can safely say that Audi has hit the back of the net big style with this eye-catching coupe.

It has a sheer road presence that demands 'look at me' and a good many people do.

Sharing the same style headlamps with LED surrounds as the A4 it looks even more distinctive in the gloom or fading light.

The A5 is a new direction for the company, somewhere between the sporty TT and the bigger saloon and inevitably comparisons will be drawn with those cars.

It certainly looks racy with swooping dynamic profile with muscular curves that make it easy on the eye. The test model's 18 inch five spoke alloys add to the sporty look.

But with a range of engines it now offers clean fuel-efficient power units that nicely complement the sporting profile of the car.

The latest of these is the powerful but frugal two-litre turbo diesel that joins the 2.7-litre and the three-litre diesels.

This engine develops 170bhp and is very rapid, propelling the car from 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 140mph. Great performance, but the fuel consumption is just as impressive, with 47.9 claimed for the Quattro version which carries the extra weight of the four-wheel drive and an even more impressive 53.7 for the non-Quattro.

Emissions of 155g/km means it is not a bad company car option and will not cost an arm and a leg in tax, but insurance costs are quite high.

The car feels quick and with the Quattro system splitting the power 60/40 to the rear wheels, cornering is a delight with the car feeling sure-footed and rock solid. The steering is precise and responsive which gives good driver involvement.

The sporty suspension on the test car means the ride is firm, which may not suit everyone, but it is far from uncomfortable.

The diesel engine is hugely refined with not even a hint of clatter under acceleration and it will sit comfortably on the motorway all day with no discomfort to passengers.

Front passengers anyway. Two adults will fit in the rear, but for most of average height, head and legroom is restricted and in common with many sporty cars, the door sill is quite high.

Despite limited space, the boot is excellent, long and wide rather than deep, with 455 litres of space available. Fold the rear seats and 829 litres is available.

The interior is also impressive with Audi's famed build quality apparent wherever you look and with key controls logically placed and close to hand.

Everything within the cabin feels durable and of the highest quality. The leather trimmed gearknob is handily placed in the middle of the in-car entertainment section operates the optional sat nav and other equipment.

There are a host of standard extras and even Audi is now offering deals with their £1,480 sport package now being offered for free until the end of May.

For that you get with 18-inch V Spoke alloy wheels; leather Sport seats; sports suspension; cruise control and mobile telephone.

Impressive kit, but standard equipment is comprehensive anyway with the usual array of electric aids and toys plus a good sound system and a comprehensive list of safety equipment. This includes ABS and stability control, plus front and side airbags and Isofix child-seat anchors.

Like most Audis the A5 range is huge with a wide choice of engines and trim.
