Audi A6 2.8 FSI SE - AUDI A6 Car Review

THERE are few things more stunning than the Devonshire countryside.

And I've found the perfect way to enjoy those green and pleasant rolling hills - behind the wheel of the wonderful Audi A6 saloon.

If you really want to know how good a car is then you should head for the great British countryside to seek out the perfect test of its credentials.

I holidayed in mid-Devon recently and the super saloon had to tackle motorways, narrow country lanes, ridiculously sharp bends, partially flooded roads - and a full emergency stop when a sheep tried to make the Great Escape across my path.

The new Audi A6 dealt with them all effortlessly, showing more confidence than a German footballer taking penalties. Against England.

This executive, luxury saloon is a market leader being longer, wider and more spacious than its competitors and with top-of-the-table performance figures to match.

The 2.8-litre FSI direct-injection engine offered 210bhp, taking you from a standing start to 62mph in just short of eight seconds. It feels even faster, which is not surprising as the FSI technology was originally developed for the Le Mans 24 hour endurance race.

The car's quality automatic transmission means that driving is a real joy, you can simply sit back and steer. Handling is also super-responsive, perfect for those windy roads, while the suspension helps the ride comfort.

The cabin, as one would expect from an Audi, is exceptionally comfortable and well laid out with quality touches like the four-spoke multi-function steering wheel, including the gear-change paddles for the automatic, heat insulated green tinted glass and a DSP sound system with 10 booming speakers offering 160 watts of output.

The Audi A6 may not be quite as pretty as that Devonshire countryside, but it is still a looker than catches the eye of many a passer-by.

And of course the salon offers an astonishing amount of luggage space in its cavernous boot providing 546 litres of capacity, an increase of 112 litres over the previous A6.

All new models are also fitted with combined light and rain sensors automatically activating or devactivating the low-beam headlights or - in the wet - the windscreen wipers.

The A6 is available with a choice of nine petrol and TDI engines, the petrol engines ranging from a two-litre turbo with FSI to a 4.2-litre V8 offering a mighty 350bhp.

The 2.8 FSI would be my own personal choice, coming in at just under £30,000. Not cheap, but then quality never is.
