CREATING the ideal combination of sports utility vehicle and sports saloon has never been an easy task. These mid-sized SUVs have recently been led by the likes of the BMW X3, but there is now a new kid on the block.
The Audi Q5 has hit the market running and has not slowed its pace because, unlike its hulking great big brother the Q7, the Q5 delivers the goods with much more grace.
The 3.0-litre TDI quattro version fitted with the latest seven-speed S-Tronic twin-clutch transmission is a perfect example of why this model is becoming a must-have in the ranks of those who want their mid-sized SUV to pack a punch.
Its strong driver focus is aided by longest-in-class wheelbase and quattro permanent four-wheel-drive.
The Q5 has a low centre of gravity for an SUV giving a great advantage in cornering, but the driving experience is enhanced tremendously due to a sophisticated five-link front and trapezoidal rear suspension system which converts the engine's high torque output into unruffled progress even over quite rough surfaces.
Although the quattro system is one of the most advanced 4x4 arrangements available, you could never brand the Q5 a dedicated extreme mud-mover. It is in fact king of the soft-roaders - vehicles that are capable of a degree of off-roading but major on using 4x4 technology to tackle the worst road surfaces and weather conditions.
There are two petrol options, a 2.0 four cylinder petrol and a 3.2 V6. In addition to the 3.0 TDI diesel there is also a 2.0 TDI.
But it is the larger, more punchy diesel that brings the driving qualities of the Q5 to the fore. Capable of 139mph and possessing a 0-62mph sprint capability of 6.5 seconds, the Q5 3.0 TDI can cut the mustard with ease in the ranks of the sports saloons in its price bracket of £34,650.
The quality of the interior is impressive and there is more than enough room in the back and luggage compartment to service the needs of a family of four.
Drivers wanting the sharpest, most car-like driving experience possible can select the unique-in-class Audi-drive select option at extra cost (£1,665.) This allows the driver to fine-tune the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle, including suspension settings, steering behaviour, throttle response and transmission shift-points.
This is just one of a whole raft of options available for this vehicle. The danger is that when ordering a 'loaded' car the price leaps astronomically. My test car with about 20 optional extras fitted tipped the price scale at a scary £57,790 when delivery, fuel, number plate and Road Fund Licence are also added.
If I have a criticism it is that the large door mirrors are set high and with my seating adjustment I found they did impede visibility somewhat.
But other than that, the Q5 3.0 TDI is a tour de force of how to get it right in the SUV sector.
