AUDI is planning to update its TT sports car range with a number of changes including the introduction of an economical high performance two-litre engine.

The new engine will go in the TT Coupe for 2011 giving the car more acceleration while improving average fuel consumption to 42.8mpg from 36.7.

CO2 emissions are also slashed from 183g/km to 154 reducing the car’s first year tax charge to £155 from £300.

The new TT Coupe 2.0 TFSI engine develops 211 PS resulting in a 0 to 60mph acceleration time of 6.1 seconds – half a second quicker than the current two-litre model.

It is one of a series of changes unveiled on the TT at the Leipzig Motor Show.

Inside there is more use of aluminium trim while LED running lights will become standard on S line models.

Bigger front air vents and bumpers are the most significant changes to the exterior while a new economy meter is being fitted to the onboard computer.

This will show how efficiently the car is being driven as well as showing the impact of devices such as air conditioning on fuel consumption.

A separate indicator will be included in the dash to show a driver when to change gear for optimum economy.

The TT coupe and roadster line up will be simplified to three trim levels – standard, Sport and S line – while the high performance TTS and TT RS models are unchanged.

A ‘sport button’ which changes throttle response, steering feel and alters the exhaust note will become optional on all models. Previously it was available only on the RS.

Audi has still to confirm prices and the on-sale date.
