What to look for:

Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most TT engines the cam belt should be changed within 80,000 miles, but some garages recommend changing sooner (e.g. 60,000 miles). Especially on the 1.8 Turbo engine.

What it means:

If the cam belt and associated parts (such as the tensioner) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon and will cause expensive damage to the engine. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built.

What to do

Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £250.

Here's an example fault on the AUDI TT (2006-)

What to look for:

Check the service history and mileage to make sure the cam belt service has been carried out. If the car is approaching 70,000 miles then the cam-belt service will need to be performed or there may be a risk of damage to the engine. Make sure that, if the service has been carried out, the water pump has been changed as well. If this has not been done then it will have to be carried out as soon as possible.

What it means:

If the cam belt service is due, then you will have to budget for it. If the car needs a water pump then you will have to budget for that also.

What to do

If the car needs a cam belt service then try to reduce the price of the car by £650. If the water pump was not changed in the cam belt service then budget £650 to have the work carried out.
