Why Buy: No other small family car has the same sky-high image. What you get is a car that is well made and great to drive, plus there is a very wide choice of models, so there is something for everyone from a coupe to a cabriolet and an estate version. Not a duff version amongst them.
Equipment: Huge equipment upgrades over the years meant that by this model even the most basic models have air conditioning and four electric windows, which for a BMW is pretty good. Obviously power steering and twin front, side and head airbags are all part of the spec. ES and Sport models have stiffer suspension, bigger wheels and different trim.
Driving: BMW never disappoint: because they are tuned to be sporty which means it is possible to put up with a firm ride around town, because out on the road it is very smooth and hugely responsive. All the engines are great, choose the six cylinder petrols if you can afford to run them, or a diesel if you can afford the higher price to buy.
Marketplace: There is no shortage of 3 series models and like all cars the bigger petrols are marked down whereas the diesels can still fetch strong money. Coupes are particularly good value especially with high specifications.
Best Buys: 2.0 petrol doesn’t cost much more to run than a 1.8 so worth considering especially as fuel consumption is 39 mpg. Otherwise 2.0 diesel is faster and more economical, but you do pay the price. For fun then a 3.0 petrol Coupe has never been cheaper.
Sum Up: Not the most exclusive model, but certainly the no-brainer buy for those who
want quality, performance and image. At least you have a large choice and can pick. Arguably the best engines you can buy on the used or new market.
